Some bands sound like they’ve already been echoing inside you, even before you hear them. That perfect blend of distortion, rhythm, message, and attitude. Above Top Secret is one of those. Born in Toronto’s buzzing creative underground, this band is carving out a sound of their own — fusing experimental rap, grunge, drum and bass, and electro-punk. Sounds like a lot? It is — and it works. Brilliantly.
Hay bandas que uno escucha por primera vez y siente que ya venían sonando dentro suyo desde antes. Que mezclan justo eso que te mueve: distorsión, ritmo, mensaje, actitud. Above Top Secret es una de esas. Desde Toronto, en plena ebullición creativa, esta banda está armando su propio frente sonoro combinando rap experimental, grunge, drum and bass, y electro-punk. Sí, leyeron bien. Y sí, funciona. Funciona muy bien.
ATS, led by Ayo Leilani and Sun Sun (the same minds behind Witch Prophet), is not here to please — they’re here to speak their truth with heavy beats and sharp lyrics. And they’re not alone: rounding out the band are a guitarist and drummer who bring raw power and energy, adding distortion, rhythm, and punch to every track. The two also form a separate duo called buskbuskbusk, where they dive into other sonic landscapes with equal intensity.
Encabezada por Ayo Leilani y Sun Sun (sí, las mismas mentes detrás de Witch Prophet), ATS es un proyecto que no se anda con vueltas. No vienen a complacer, vienen a decir lo que sienten, con beats pesados y letras filosas. My expectations shot up when I saw who was behind the project. The concept and the mix of influences (Rage Against The Machine, The Prodigy, M.I.A. in her rawest era) hit a nerve with what I love in music. And so far, the two singles they’ve dropped have delivered.
Desde que supe quiénes estaban detrás del proyecto supe que tenía que sonar bien. Pero no solo eso: el concepto, la mezcla de influencias (Rage Against The Machine, The Prodigy, M.I.A. en su era más incendiaria), todo apuntaba a algo que conecta directo con lo que más disfruto en la música. Y hasta ahora, los dos sencillos que lanzaron no decepcionan para nada.
The latest one, «Security,» is a punch in the face—in the best way. Written over a decade ago, it feels painfully relevant today: It tackles surveillance, state violence, and the billion-dollar myth of safety. It’s loud, distorted, and sincere. There’s anger in it, memory, purpose, and a powerful call to awareness.
El más reciente, «Security», es un puñetazo en la mesa. Una canción escrita hace más de diez años pero que suena como si fuera compuesta ayer: habla de vigilancia, de violencia estatal, de esa idea falsa de seguridad que se compra con presupuesto militar. Lo dice claro, lo grita con bajos distorsionados y una base que sacude. Hay rabia, sí, pero también conciencia, memoria, poesía.
What I admire most about Above Top Secret is that they make bold, uncomfortable, and necessary music that moves you, wakes you up, and makes you want to raise your voice.
Y eso es justamente lo que más valoro de Above Top Secret: hacen música que incomoda, que cuestiona, pero también que une. Que invita a pensar, a moverse, a no quedarse callado.
