This week’s playlist brings together funk from Barcelona, shoegaze from Costa Rica, garage punk from Montreal, and slacker rock from Toronto. Esta semana en la música latina, Meridian Brothers y Mexican Institute of Sound lanzan El Campeón (Bienes Funerarios) antes de su álbum conjunto Ruido Tovar, que sale el 22 de mayo. Eblis Álvarez y Camilo Lara llevan la cumbia psicodélica mexicana de los 70 en una nueva dirección. Las Robertas regresan con el primer sencillo de All We Need Is Now, su quinto álbum que sale el 26 de junio. La canción Everything I Wanted to Be abre el álbum, mezclando guitarras y teclados tan estrechamente con la voz de Mercedes Oller que es difícil distinguirlos. La canción reflexiona sobre el paso del tiempo en una relación, observando más que resolviendo. Menino Gutto con Chloé Silva cierra la serie Maracanazo Vol. I con LPM. La entrega seca, casi gritada de Chloé crea una tensión instantánea, y juntos construyen una canción donde el agotamiento y la culpa coexisten. La artista guatemalteca aLex vs aLex comparte venus & romeo, una canción escrita en un día y grabada en una sola toma, que incluye vocoder, soft alt-R&B y la voz tranquila y absorbente de Sofía Insua. Los Skeepers con Cata Contreras capturan ese momento incómodo en el que algo podría pasar entre dos personas pero nadie lo dice. Su canción tú y yo (y todo lo que falta) fue creada en una sesión sin expectativas y suena exactamente así. María Codino comienza una nueva etapa con Club de Nostalgia, una canción pop inspirada en los 80 que se siente bailable pero habla de moverse a un ritmo diferente al del mundo y comenzar a soltar, un sentimiento que todos conocen pero no pueden nombrar del todo. Funky Munchies, el proyecto colaborativo del productor peruano Ginope, termina con Ritmo Animal, el primer adelanto del álbum Gula. Es una mezcla de funk moderno y electrónica bailable, con sus intenciones claras desde el principio.

There are seven new tracks from the north this week, and their variety is what ties the selection together. Taxi Girls start things off with Say It!, the first single from their debut album Static, out June 26 on Stomp Records. This all-female Montreal quartet has been making waves in the underground since 2022 with their dual-vocal garage punk and raw energy. When Iggy Pop mentions you on BBC 6 Music, you know you’re onto something. MOONRIIVR returns with Force of Habit, a blend of 60s kraut rock, surf, and noise that begins controlled and ends in distortion. The analog production makes it feel like a lost classic, and the song is about letting go of the past even if you’re not sure you can. CJ Wiley shares FLUKE, a Toronto slacker rock track about modern dating, endless swiping, dead-end texts, and that surprise moment when you connect with someone unexpected. Eli Rose releases Elle Tient Debout ahead of her September album. She brings French-language pop from Montreal, with 26 million streams and a voice that feels personal. Skip Waiters featuring Ben Reilly present american IDOL, produced by Skip and Lord Quest. The track borrows the name of the famous TV show and has a clear message about it. LESS KILLJOY offers HARLEY QUINN, an alt-rock song full of vulnerability and unresolved tension, capturing the feeling of losing your sense of self when life gets overwhelming. The Zaxons wrap up with Keswick Cutouts. Julian Growcott, Csaba Laszlo, and Ben Wilson deliver post-punk where the bass leads, the guitar is minimal, and the synth stays in the background. The lo-fi sound is pushed to the limit, vocals are intentionally buried, and the instrumental sections stand out. This young band knows exactly when to hold back.
